School Council

Pupil voice is extremely important to us at Clanfield- we take it very seriously to help us drive changes across the school.   Each member is elected by their peers via a democratic process, where they deliver a presentation on why they would be a good choice as a school councillor.

The School Council meet regularly with Mrs Dawkins to discuss key issues. They have also met with the caretaker, Finance Officer and Governors to discuss budgeting and future aspirations, as well as special guests/parents to discuss ideas.

Children know that if they have an idea or want to make a change, then they have the power to make this happen through the class suggestion box. Agendas are shared with classes and all thoughts are then brought back to the meetings with Mrs Dawkins.

Decisions made so far include:

  • Agreeing and designing our shared school values in 2023
  • Fundraising ideas for Comic Relief
  • Agreeing a cosy soft clothes day
  • Raising money for a scooter shed and visiting stores to find the best value shed for our money
  • Collecting ideas to make lunch times a fantastic experience for all- now there is a big range of toys with something for everyone to do
  • Organising a tuck shop by surveying items with pupils, and then selling these at break times
  • Compiling rules and expectations for the woodland area
  • Agreeing a shopping list for indoor playtimes

We are very proud of the achievements made by our school councillors in just one year, and thank each one of them for inspiring so many pupils to apply for the role in Autumn. Another example is how they collected views on lunchtimes and discovered some pupils wanted a quiet area. They suggested ideas and passed them on to Mrs Dawkins. Over the summer holidays, Barrett Wilson homes and our local volunteering group 'The Tree Gang' transformed an area for the children:

Keep an eye on this web page to find out what changes the school council achieve next! The next round of councillors will be taking part in a "Learn with the Lords" online session in November and will report back to the pupils.
